My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry, Fredrik Backman(4.0)
This is a delightful story from the author of ‘A Man Called
Ove’. It is full of interesting characters and has a touching plot. One of the
most interesting is the protagonist, a precocious ‘almost eight year old’ who
has been mainly brought up by her eccentric grandmother. Soon into the book,
the grandmother dies and the rest of the story follows Elsa as she embarks on
her grandma’s last request of delivering a letter as part of a treasure hunt,
simultaneously finding out who her grandmother really was and coming to terms
with her death. Throughout the story, Elsa recalls for the reader the elaborate
fantasy world her grandmother had shared with her. As she meets people from the
past, they take their appropriate place in both the fantasy and her real world
and she gains insight to her grandmother’s teachings. Backman has once again
elegantly balances the humor and tragedy found in family life – I hope they
make a movie out of this one too!
